Maurice B. Allen was born March 20, 1926, in Lansing, Michigan. He attended Western Michigan University before transferring to Notre Dame University in order to study engineering and naval science. He enlisted in the US Navy and served on a Navy destroyer in the Pacific Fleet. Allen ultimately graduated with a Bachelors in Architecture from the University of Michigan in 1950. In 1939, Tony Rosenthal attended the Cranbrook Academy of Art to study sculpture with Carl Milles. There he met and became friends with Charles Eames, Florence Schust Knoll, Eero Saarinen, and others. After WWII, Rosenthal worked on commissions for several architectural firms and taught sculpture at UCLA.
